Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight, had a few hobbies for the purposes of relaxation. There was meditation, of course, but he also enjoyed targeting wamp rats, cruising landspeeders at expeditious velocity, flower arrangement, and his current activity - zippers.

Han Solo’s zipper to be precise. A subtle shift of his fingers and Han’s fly opened.

“Luke, how’s it hangin’?” he asked as they passed in the hall.

Luke just gave a sagely nod rather than responding the way he wanted to, little to the left. Or, rather, Han was hanging a little to the left. Turning the corner, he flattened himself against the wall and waited as Han walked into the conference room. Stealthy, he crept up to the door and listened through it.

“Han! We are about to appear on holovid throughout the galaxy! Can’t you keep your fly closed!”
“I don’t know why this keeps happening to me,” he griped.

Too bad, Luke thought. Han on holovid with his fly down, just like last week, would have been even better.

Straightening up, he calmly made his way back down the hall the way he’d come, only pausing to lower Wedge’s fly as the other man passed.

Three Things - Personal Update

1 - Alex is potty training and it is going surprisingly easily. I am kind of astonished. Of course this post means it will go to hell from here. Still, he just started last Saturday and he made it through an entire day without an accident.
2 - Robb has had some setbacks with his dissertation. He's had to change topics and he is almost finished putting together a new committee. Yet he remains committed to finishing, which is great and I think Cat can tell me exactly how difficult and awesome that is.
3 - I am exploring being promoted at work to instructional designer and sometime project manager. As soon as Robb is finished I think I'll go back to school for my masters and I'm going to explore doing a psychometrican degree. Isn't that a great name? It means someone who validates exams, really, but the name is awesome. It sounds like such a boot wearing dominatrix. Are there any other kind?

Alex Update

And, he got out of his crib. Climbed over the side and fell on the floor. He's all right, but it was very freaky for Robb and I because we heard the thunk and assumed he fell against the crib railing (if the crying stops within 30 seconds all is OK). But no, the crying got closer and then (HORRORS!) the door opened!

I made him a little nest on the floor to sleep in for tonight, but tomorrow I have to convert his crib to a toddler bed.

To keep him in his room at night rather than wandering around the house, I turned around the door handle and locked it from the outside.

The Messenger

I was watching Seven Chances (1926) with Alex last night. I thought he'd like it because it has lots of music and Buster Keaton being funny. I was struck by a character I hadn't really noticed before, the black messenger. He rides into town on his horse, with his feet sticking out straight on both sides and his walk is hysterical. So, I looked up his name and as expected couldn't find anything. I resorted to looking in Donald Bogle's book, Images of the Other, the authority of a sort on representations of black people in film. His book has an entry on Seven Chances black messenger, but no name for the actor. He's been lost as far as I can tell, entirely forgotten.

And I realize his figure was a jester stereotype, but he was also funny.

What if he was the funniest comedian of his generation and no one will ever know?

We were unpacking books and Alex wanted to help, so he took one out of the box. It was e.e. cummings. So, I read him a little, and it was nicer read aloud than I expected it to be, even though cummings is really a visual treat. For me at least. Then Alex took out Emily Dickinson and I read him a little of that.

Robb gagged and fled from the room. It seems he does not care for Dickinson. I can understand that. She's pretty woeful, isn't she? When he came back, I said, "At least it wasn't Sylvia Plath." He agreed, but no, it could never have been Plath because I don't even own a copy of The Bell Jar. Sylvia Plath gives me hives.

I have a great hubby. My birthday weekend did not start well. I woke up with a sore throat. Two hours into it I got my period and some splendid cramps with it. And, I looked around the fridge and things and found there wasn't much to eat for lunch other than oranges (although admittedly one would be good for my cold, so I'm eating it now).

I texted Rux to whine about it. (He was out shopping for ingredients for dinner.) He got home in time for lunch, a bag of take out Chinese in hand. Oh, and not just that! He served it in the first of my birthday presents, the new soup bowl I asked for. It's from the Asian market. It looks like this one except it's a dragon design instead of a flower.
